< Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN codes)It is the tenth digit that gives you the model year for GM. Ive been working at a Chevy dealer for years running codes/vins.For example ( my examples only apply to 2001-2015 gm vehicles)Remember 10th digit from the beginning, (left to right).2001.. 12002..22003..3.etc.2009..9After 09 the tenth digit was given a letter2010.. A2011..B2012..C2013..D2014..E2015..FEtc..We have another 20 years worth of lettersThanks for reading. You can always check your model year by looking in your drivers side door jamb and it will give you model year. If it was assembled in July or later it's probably a model year later than listed.

American GM[edit]
American VIN format[edit]
GM has traditionally encoded the platform as the fourth character of the VIN. Other content includes an engine code and manufacturing plant. GM's VIN format is as follows:

Platform codes[edit]
GM used a lettered system of automobile platform codes for three decades. These letters were used as the fourth position of the VIN. Though today's GM platforms use Greek characters, they are still encoded with Latin characters in the fourth position. Position five encodes the specific model and trim level of the vehicle.

American engine codes[edit]
GM encodes the engine type in character 8 of the VIN. The following table outlines the various engines encoded there:
Engine codes for passenger cars[edit]
2010 Chevy Malibu engine code B, 2.4lMistake on the engine code M, this M code comes out on the 1995 - 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and the engine is an RPO L82 3.1 SFI engine. This engine made it's first appearance on the A-Body sisters Buick Century and Oldsmobile's Cutlass Ciera 'S', the 1994 L-Body Chevrolet Beretta/Corsica, and it's N-Body siblings, which include the Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile Achieva, and Pontiac Grand Am, but Oldsmobile also had offerings of this engine offering in the 'Late' 1993 W-Body Cutlass for the engine to also incorporate into the 1994 model year W-Bodies, which included the Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, with the aforementioned Monte Carlo and it's sedan equivalent, the revised Lumina to follow suit the next model year, 1995. It continued it's second iteration, the LG8 3.1 in 2000 (VIN code 'J'), which finally ceased production in the 2005 model year W-Body version of the Century.
VIN code T also designates a 3.1 V6, the base engine in the 1990-92 Camaro/Firebird platform, and VIN code 8 is much better known as the L98 5.7 V8 TPI, standard in the 1985-91 Corvette and optional in the 1987-92 Camaro/Firebird platform .
Missing Entry: 1985-1988 Pontiac Fieros have a 9 engine code for the 2.8L L44 V6.
Missing Entry: The 2009 Corvette and 2011 Camaro SS use a W engine code for the 6.2L LS3 V8.
Missing Entry: Vin Code V for 2.4 L LE9 2.4L MFI I4
Warning: Issues with the decoding are related to year/model combinations. Such as the 4.1 V6 is not included in the list, however it was used on El Dorada and some Cadillac models. Each Year has different break down for each code, a complete list would be a subject of its own. Along with Plants and some model break downs over years.
Missing Entry: 1991 Limo with engine code 7, is not listed. According to one source the limo engine is a 5.7L.
Missing Entry: Corvette Z06, vin code S 5.7L LS6 2001-2204 and vin code E 7.0L LS7 2005-2010 and later

Prior to 1930 H-D VIN numbers were a bit erratic and model number designations changed frequently. Unfortunately there is very little information out there for these numbers and what information is available is not always very accurate.
From 1930 to 1962 the VIN number was the engine number and was only located on the left case. The VIN was between 8 and 10 digits with the first 2 digits being the production year, the next 2 – 4 letters being the model designation and the last 4 digits being the production number

Example:
Year | Model | Production Number |
49 | FL | 0001 |
1962-1969:
From 1962 to 1969 the VIN numbers where pretty much the same as from 1930 to 1962, but if the production number had 4 digits the first digit would be odd during odd production years and even during even production years. If the production number had 5 digits the first two digits would be odd during odd production years and even during even production years.
Example:
Year | Model | Production Number |
66 | FLHB | 22001 |
1970-1980:
From 1970 to 1980 the VIN number could be found on both the frame and the engine and would match exactly with the exception of a few months in 1979 which was due to an idea by the factory to make them different. The idea was quickly killed after law enforcement notified Harley-Davidson that it made the bikes look stolen. The production date range was from 1/9/1979 to 2/7/1979. The VIN numbers affected are 43000H9 through 48199H9. The engine numbers where 10 digit numerical IDs.
The VIN numbers of this era where 9 digit codes where the first two digits corresponded to the model code (see list below), the next 5 digits were the production numbers (always starting above 10,000) and the last 2 digits were the year code (see list below).
Example:
Model | Production Number | Year |
2A | 10859 | H4 |
Model Codes:

H1 = 1971 | H4 = 1974 | H7 = 1977 | J0 = 1980 |
H2 = 1972 | H5 = 1975 | H8 = 1978 |
From 1981 to present the VIN has been a 17 digit code located on the frame and abbreviated on the engine. In this VIN the first 3 digits are the world manufacturer ID (see list below), the fourth digit is the weight class (see weight class list below). The next two letters are the model designation (see list below), the sixth digit was the engine type (see list below), the seventh digit was the introduction period (see list below), The eighth digit was the VIN check digit which could be 0-9 or X, the next letter was the model year (see list below), the letter after that was the assembly plant (see list below) and the last 6 numbers were the production numbers. If you are looking for information on a specific VIN number on a bike produced after 1981 you can look it up on Harley-Davidson's official VIN search at this link: https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson.com/sip/vehicle/lookup?vin=

VIN Location
If you want to find the Polaris VIN, you should take a little brush, a flashlight, a pencil and a piece of paper. You can start looking for the stamped number on the left side frame rail. Take a look at the front wheel well on the left side that's just beside the fender. A brush will be useful for cleaning the board and the flashlight will let you read the code. One more code can be found on a tube in wheel area of the front fender in the first ATV models. Use a pencil to write the code down even if you think it looks the same way as in the registration card.
You can use the Polaris VIN decoder for deciphering the whole code or you can find out some details on your own. It's easy to remember that the Sportsman that has 1 to 4 as the first character was produced in the North America. If there's X in the second place, it was made for the USA drivers. It's much easier to decode the next symbols with the decoder. - The manufacturer and the country where the car was produced.
